Our Life in Provence

By: bon

As we reach the end of our eighth month enjoying our new life in the South of France our only thoughts about the move are why we didn’t do it years ago.
Living in the south offers of course a wonderful climate of blue skies and warm sunshine. Even the deep frosts of winter seem completely bearable with the unique brightness of the Provencal skies.
It is not just the weather that is keeping us so happy but also the warmth of the welcome from the French people. Everyone from the bank manager to the lady in the bread shop seems glad to see us and they are universally tolerant at our less than adequate attempts at their language. We are thoroughly enjoying trying to speak French and attend a half day a week French lesson which is both beneficial and entertaining.
Another striking feature of the region is the vast amounts of open space. We have barely seen a traffic jam and the motorways are a positive pleasure to drive. In general the homes are well spaced and although our neighbours are kind and supportive they are never intrusive and no trouble at all.
The fear of the move was a massive factor and there are differences to the requirements of the UK but the assistance we received from our estate agent Valerie made the whole process easy. She not only assisted with finding us a financial advisor but even accompanied us to the bank to help when we arranged our mortgage, She was in attendance when we went through the legal procedures of house buying and even helped us buying our new fridge and telephones.
The system is painless as you are guided slowly step by step to completion and all you have to do is enjoy the French way of life.
If you crave British friends there is an ex pat community but we have found friends of all nationalities down here.
The cost of living is very similar to the UK with as you would expect some things cheaper and others more expensive. We enjoy trying all the French foods but if you pine for English cuisine then virtually everything is available somewhere, even HP sauce.
From our home we can enjoy the beautiful beaches of the south in just 20 minutes or drive over the famous mountain tops. We can mix with the rich and famous at St Tropez or enjoy fantastic meals in the quiet villages. We can visit world famous sites such as the Gorge of Verdon or find our own simple pleasure watching the wildlife in the forests of Provence. We have had the pleasure of watching an Eagle circle above us whilst we breakfast, seeing wild pigs visit our Garden and enjoy a wide array of butterflies and birds. We can visit the Camargue and enjoy the Flamingos and the wild horses or we can be more adventurous and go horse riding, sailing or rock climbing.
Many Brits choose to retire here and others like us are working but no matter what you do there is a feeling that everyday is a holiday when you live in Provence.
