In August 1943, Henri Matisse said: "This morning while walking near my house, seeing all these girls, women and men riding their bikes to the market, I thought I was in Tahiti". With Matisse, numerous artists, poets and painters have been part of the scene in Vence: Dufy, Chagall, Dubuffet, Anthony Mars, and D.H. Lawrence.
