Ubbaye
The Ubbaye is a high altitude valley, surrounded by many peaks
over 3,000 metres high, and in the valley the river Ubbaye flows for 70 km
with many torrents.
All along its sunny banks you can still find farmlands,
inhabited by
true mountain people whose lives were based on the rhythm of
transhumance (moving cattle to higher ground).
In the past, the Ubbaye valley was one of the most
isolated regions in France, often snowed in for several
months. It became a tourist area fairly recently thanks to the
construction of the Serre-Ponçon dam and lake in 1960.
The lake covers 30 km², and it is a natural paradise
where you can breathe in the pure mountain air and enjoy a huge
selection of outdoor sports!
