This is a departement is well know for its fields of lavender and its protected natural sites.

To the north of the departement stand high mountains which form the valley of Ubaye near Barcelonnette.

West of Haut Verdon is the Val d'Allos.

To the south, the famous canyons the Gorges de Verdon offer a beautiful spectacle of lakes (like Esparron lake), cliffs, and wonderful villages such as Moustiers Saintes Marie, Allemagne en Provence, Gréoux Les Bains, Quinson.

Forcalquier, les Mees, area to the west is of a more Provencal spirit as you see more hills and vineyards in the landscape. The valley of the Durance with its villages such as Forcalquier, Les Mees, Lurs offer the main tourist attractions of the departement
