Gordes
Standing on the edge of the plateau of Vaucluse, Gordes is one
of the must villages of Lubéron to live.
Its houses of white and grey stones rise up around the rock
where the village is set. At the top of it you will see the
church and the castle from which you have a wonderful panorama
on the hills of the Luberon.
Gordes has been classified one of the most beautiful villages of
France.
While strolling around the tiny streets, which climb up between
the tall houses, you will discover here and there beautiful old
doorways, arcades and walls of flat stones perfectly renovated.
Not far, the old village of the "bories" is curious, Bories are
little round huts built in stone that were used by shepherds or
hunters.
You cannot miss the fabulous Abbey of Senanque hidden in the
green valley; it’s wonderful in the summer with all the lavender
fields around it! Cistercian monks live there and produce honey,
lavender essences, and liqueurs.
Gordes has also a worldwide reputation due to Peter Mayle's book
A Year in Provence!
